Brighton forward Danny Welbeck has surprisingly admitted that he was lucky to win the penalty that secured the draw against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Gaviotas fought back in controversial circumstances to claim a 1-1 draw against the Premier League champions.

Diogo Jota broke the deadlock at the hour mark at Amex Stadium, and Sadio Mane appeared to have sealed all three points for the Reds with a late header, but VAR ruled him offside.

The use of technology was back at the center of the debate minutes later, when Stuart Attwell awarded Brighton a penalty after seeing a monitor on the field side as Andy Robertson kicked Welbeck’s boot.

Pascal Gross converted the penalty in the 93rd minute after Neal Maupay had already shot a penalty in the first half.

There seemed to be very little in the challenge, and Jurgen Klopp was left boiling full time.

And Welbeck admitted after the game that he was a bit lucky to have earned a point for his team.

“It was one of those games where we had to try to stay until the end,” Welbeck said. “We knew we could create some opportunities and exploit his bottom line.

“We have a soft penalty but it is one that we will accept. We got the point and we will now move on to next week.

“In today’s game with VAR, I went ahead and hit him. He kicked me and then the ball, so … The referee went to see it on the screen and made his decision.

“The player said we’d rather go down fighting. Going into this game we knew we could cause trouble.

“They have so much firepower, but we wanted some firepower of our own. We could have advanced in the game, but these things happen.

“They could have gone further with VAR and offside rules. There’s no benefit of the doubt in today’s game, but it’s 1-1 and that’s how it ended.”
