Danny Murphy has backed Liverpool’s plan to sign Jack Butland.
The national transfer window closes tonight and Liverpool have been linked to a move for the 27-year-old.
According to The Mirror, there have been negotiations between the Reds and Stoke City for him to join the Premier League champions.
There are big questions about Adrian after a series of high-profile mistakes in 2020 so far, with Alisson injured.
Butland was billed to stardom once, but the former England international, who has nine caps, is now heating up the bench for a championship club, illustrating his fall from grace.
And former Liverpool midfielder Murphy thinks a move by Butland makes a lot of sense.
He told the Football Index podcast on YouTube: “I quite like the idea of that, yeah. Jack Butland is trying to find himself again after a really good start to his career.
“He fell by the wayside, so this could be a great opportunity to go to a wonderful club, learn from a brilliant goalkeeper, regain some confidence and start over. This makes sense to me. I think it would be a smart business. “
This makes sense and it doesn’t.
On the one hand, Butland, who makes £ 35,000 a week at the moment, is clearly a talented goalkeeper and if Liverpool can pick him up for next to nothing, with his contract expiring next summer, why wouldn’t they?
That said, if Butland can’t get a game for the Potters, why would he be a better choice than Adrian to replace Alisson?
The window closes at 5pm tonight and it will be fascinating to see if this one has legs.
