PETALING JAYA: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican has congratulated track cyclists Azizulhasni Awang and Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom heading to the Tokyo Olympics for flying the Malaysian flag after they the duo took the podium at the Australian National Cycling Championships in Brisbane.

Azizul won the men’s elite keirin final at Anna Meares Velodrome on Sunday (December 20) before reigning Commonwealth Games champion Matthew Glaetzer of Australia.

His teammate Shah Firdaus came third in the final.

Melbourne cyclists Azizul and Shah Firdaus were accepted as guest riders at the last minute for the Australian national gathering, which received the go-ahead after the Queensland-Victoria border was opened earlier this month.

Azizul finished fourth in the sprint on Saturday (December 19) while Shah Firdaus made it to the last eight.

“Azizul and Shah Firdaus were back on the podium internationally despite not having raced for so long.

“I am sure that all Malaysians will be proud of their successes. I hope this motivates all athletes in the country to improve and look forward to resuming international competitions,” Reezal said.
