Cyberjaya Now Hosts Malaysia’s First Autonomous Vehicle Test Route

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will start testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) on two routes that stretch a total of 7 km in Cyberjaya.

A shorter route runs through the Futurise and MaGIC buildings, and a longer one includes Persiaran Apec, Persiaran Cyberpoint, and Persiaran Rimba.

Known as the Cyberjaya Malaysia Autonomous Vehicle (MyAV) test path, it was developed by Futurise, a subsidiary of Cyberview Sdn Bhd, with the Ministry of Transport under the National Regulatory Sandbox (NRS) initiative.

In late 2019, the Ministry and MPSepang completed and approved the Guidelines for AV Testing on Public Roads in Cyberjaya before work began on the test routes, according to a statement.

The guideline outlined key safety risks and mitigation procedures, such as having a trained safety officer in the vehicle and requiring a mandatory visual identifier to be worn at all times during testing.

The vehicle must have its signal lights on and road markings must be posted at each route entry point to inform other drivers that an AV is being tested.

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Datuk Isham Ishak, said: “The future of autonomous vehicles is expected to be huge, penetrating even the industry of trucks, boats or other passenger transport vehicles such as buses.”

The government must be one step ahead in terms of providing guidance and solid infrastructure, and be quick to assess new regulations, he added.

Expanding coverage to some key locations like Putrajaya will be the next step, Futurise CEO Mahadhir Aziz said.

Futurise, as a public policy advisor to industry and government, said it is analyzing a future policy that will cover regulatory and job creation aspects.

All applications to use the Cyberjaya AV test path should be directed to Futurise as secretariat.

The application will be considered by the MyAV Assessment Committee chaired by the Ministry of Transport together with MPSepang, Malaysia Road Transport Department (JPJ), Public Land Transport Agency (APAD), Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS) ), Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and Automotive Development Center, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (ADC, UTM).
