PETALING JAYA: Klang Valley residents were spared another round of unscheduled water outages, after state authorities managed to stop two incidents of river pollution.

Selangor Committee for Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation and Consumer Affairs Chairman Hee Loy Sian (Photo) said the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) received two complaints regarding water pollution incidents on Thursday (October 22), which had the potential to cause the suspension of the state’s water treatment plants. , once again.

“Odor contamination was detected at Sungai Kundang at 10.45 am during the 24-hour monitoring of Operation Ops Statik in Sungai Gong, Rawang.

“Preliminary investigation by LUAS found that the odor contamination was from biodiesel, resulting in more than 10TON (threshold odor number) found in the Kundang Jaya industrial area.

“A further investigation by LUAS and Air Selangor into a suspicious premise found the same odor and up to 10 tons of biodiesel in the final release area of the premise,” it said in a statement on Friday (October 23).

Hee said that LUAS issued a Letter of Order under Section 121 (1), LUAS Act 1999 to the premises involved to immediately stop the discharge of effluents and carry out clean-up activities.

He pointed out that LUAS had also activated works to eliminate odor contamination by placing 12 bags equivalent to 300 kg of activated carbon in the area.

“Samples were taken from three different locations in Sungai Kundang and sent to the Malaysian Department of Chemistry (JKM) for content analysis and other related actions,” he added.

Hee noted that a separate incident of a diesel oil spill on Lake Putrajaya was detected at 9.35am on Thursday, caused by a leaking landslide tank in the underground pipeline of the National Cancer Institute (IKN), Putrajaya.

“The investigations found that the diesel oil had been poured into the IKN drain and entered the lake.

“The Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) has instructed IKN to implement immediate clean-up work to prevent the incident from getting worse,” he said.

Hee said that several mitigation measures carried out by IKN included the repair of the connecting pipes, the placement of an oil platform and an oil arm in the drainage system and the suction of the oil.

It was noted that the incident could have led to contamination of Sungai Langat and caused a disruption at the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant, which is approximately 10 km downstream from the spillway.

“LUAS has requested PPj’s cooperation to place an oil boom in the area of the oil spill between Putrajaya Lake and Sungai Langat to prevent further contamination.

Hee noted that LUAS will continuously monitor together with the parties involved.

“Both incidents were handled with immediate success by LUAS, Air Selangor, PPJ and the agencies involved.

“There is no reported interruption of the work of the water treatment plant, nor interruption of the water supply,” he said.

Hee encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity that could lead to contamination of water resources.

“The preservation and conservation of water resources is our responsibility. We await the consideration and cooperation of all parties, ”he said.
