ALOR SETAR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department aims to collect RM40.7 billion in taxes this year, or more than RM38.6 billion in 2020.
Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (pix) He is confident that the department can achieve the goal even though the country has yet to deal with the sting of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to grow compared to last year, which contracted around 5.6 percent; this year, GDP is expected to grow between 6.5 and 7.5 percent. This will be of some help in our collection of revenue from the Customs department.
“Obviously, Covid-19 affects the collection since it is related to the economy; so last year it had an impact on the revenue of the Internal Revenue Bureau (IRB) and the Customs department, “he told reporters after opening the Kedah Customs Office building here today.
At the beginning of his speech, Tengku Zafrul revealed that the construction package for the building that houses a multipurpose room, the Narcotics Unit office and an Enforcement store, among others, was worth more than RM40 million.
“This additional infrastructure will centralize Kedah Customs services that previously had to run from dispersed locations around Alor Setar. With this new building, the department’s workforce can operate in a more conducive environment and offer quality service to customers, ”he said.
Meanwhile, he said that Kedah Customs contributed more than RM1.066 billion to the country’s coffers in 2020, and is aiming to increase it to RM1.2 billion this year. -Called
