Curtis Jones’ prospects at Liverpool have just improved, and Thiago Alcântara is one reason

[ad_1]

The future certainly looks bright for Liverpool, but so is the present. Jürgen Klopp has spent the last five years building a soccer superpower that now dominates both nationally and in Europe.

Part of that success is bringing in high-quality players ready to make an instant impact, but Klopp has always let the club’s young stars have a chance if they deserve it. One such player is Curtis Jones, who continues to get better and better.

Klopp highly values the 19-year-old. The fact that he was chosen during the frenzied opening day clash against Leeds speaks volumes for his position in the Anfield pecking order. But could the arrival of a certain Thiago Alcântara slow down Jones’ progression to the first team?

From the outside looking in, that might be a fair statement. Despite the small sample size this season, Klopp has gone with Jones on every team of the day so far. It is not something you would do if you had a low position in the manager’s opinion.

The next step for Jones is to be a regular starter, but with the sheer number of players available at Klopp’s disposal in the middle of the park, this is unlikely for almost every other midfielder. Thiago’s arrival may mean Jones has less playing time, but in the long run it can only be a good thing for the teenager.

Working with a player who has Thiago’s aura can only benefit a youngster. If you can’t improve after having 100 or more training sessions alongside a Spanish-type player, then you should question whether you’re in the right job.

Was Jones ever going to start more than 20 games this season? It’s highly unlikely, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a role to play. You could see the impact Jones has against Leeds with the ability to propel the team forward and launch continuous attacks.

Thiago may be for the Liverpool present, but Jones is for the future, as well as for the here and now. We can wait many more years for the Kirkby Academy graduate to make a name for himself at Anfield.

What I read on Liverpool.com

My colleague Joel Rabinowitz has written an excellent article about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and what the future holds for him at Anfield. Does Thiago’s arrival mean that Ox falls even lower in the midfield pecking order? You can read Joel’s article here and find out.

There is also an intriguing piece by Andrew Beasley showing how Liverpool are already displaying title-winning form just two games into the season.

What i’m hearing

I am a huge Jamie Webster fan. His new album ‘We Get By’ is certainly something I would recommend to anyone.
