KOTA KINABALU: An eight-year-old boy was killed in a crocodile attack while swimming with a friend in a river in Lahad Datu on Thursday (December 10).

Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Rohan Shah Ahmad said that in the 1.30pm incident, the boy was swimming in Sungai Sabah Baru with a friend when the reptile attacked.

“The friend, who is also an eight-year-old boy, immediately swam to shore and ran to the victim’s father who was nearby to ask for help after seeing the attack,” he said in a statement Friday.

He said a search was later organized for the victim and that he was found not far from where he was last seen around 3.30pm.

“There were serious injuries to the boy’s body, including the waist, chest and stomach,” said ACP Rohan, adding that the boy’s body was taken for an autopsy.

This is the second crocodile attack reported in Sabah in the past week, when a teenager escaped death when he was attacked by the reptile in Sungai Mengkabong Tuaran on December 4.

He managed to escape with injuries thanks to his friends who had joined together to attack the crocodile and drive it away.

Traps have been set to catch the reptile, but it has not yet been captured.
