Cricket: Cricket – India Players Allegedly Suffering Racial Abuse From Crowd At Sydney Test – Reports

SYDNEY (Reuters) – India’s players were allegedly subjected to racial abuse by part of the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in the third test against Australia on Saturday, local media reported.

India captain Ajinkya Rahane and other senior players spoke with referees at the end of the game on the third day after speedy Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj complained of hearing racist insults while playing near the limit rope, according to reports.

India’s batsman Cheteshwar Pujara did not respond when asked about the matter at the press conference at the end of the day.

Reuters was unable to confirm whether the cricket board of India (BCCI) had officially filed a complaint with its Cricket Australia counterpart.

The two boards and the International Cricket Council (ICC) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We have come to know the issue,” BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla told India’s ANI news agency.

“Cricket is a gentleman’s game and these kinds of things are not allowed or accepted.”

In accordance with the ICC’s anti-discrimination policy, the host board would have to investigate any incident related to “inappropriate conduct” and submit a report to the world governing body within two weeks.

A man was banned from attending cricket matches in New Zealand for two years after being convicted of abusing England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during a 2019 tour.
