GEORGE TOWN, February 21: A total of 16,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine arrived at Penang International Airport (LTAPP) today at 5.35 pm, via special Cathay Pacific Cargo flight CX079.

The plane took off from Hong Kong and transited through Singapore before arriving in Penang. Subsequently, the vaccine was sent to the Vaccine Storage Center (VSC).

Dignitaries present at the LTAPP included Vice Minister of Health I Datuk Dr. Noor Azmi Ghazali, Prime Minister Chow Kon Yeow, State Health Director Dr. Asmayani Khalib, and State Police Chief Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan.

When contacted by Bernama, Sahabudin said that state police had increased compliance and security to accompany the vaccine that arrived at LTAPP today to be shipped to the designated VSC.

He said that a special team would be involved during the transfer and delivery of the vaccine to several other places in the state, including the place to carry out the vaccination process for the front-line.

“Police officers and staff from various state departments are involved in tracking the vaccine to ensure that it reaches the designated location safely without any threat from either party.

“There is no need to close the road for the movement of the vaccine because the police, especially the transit team, are ready to accompany the vehicle that carries the vaccine. We (the police) will always adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) established to ensure that everything goes smoothly, ”he said.

Dr. Asmayani said Chow will be the first in the state to receive the vaccine in the state when the vaccination exercise begins next week.

Meanwhile, Chow hoped the immunization program would address the pandemic, while also calling on people to support the effort. Called
