HONG KONG: The Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic continues across the Asia-Pacific as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Nepal witnessed a rapid increase in cases over the weekend.

Bangladesh reported 636 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, down slightly from Friday’s high of 709.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said during a briefing on Saturday afternoon that “636 new positive cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.”

“The total number of positive cases is now 13,770 and the number of deaths is currently 214 with the eight recent deaths,” he added.

Indonesia has reported 533 new cases of the virus, bringing the total to 13,645, government spokesman for Covid-19-related Achmad Yurianto said on Saturday.

There have been a total of 959 deaths in the country, an increase of 16 in the last 24 hours.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases has risen to 27,474 in Pakistan, the country’s health ministry said on Saturday morning.

A total of 618 patients died while 7,756 recovered. So far, health authorities across the country have conducted a total of 270,025 tests, official statistics showed.

South Korea reported 18 more cases of Covid-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of Sunday morning, bringing the total number of infections to 10,840.

Death was not confirmed for the second consecutive day, leaving the death toll at 256.

Meanwhile, the city government of South Korea’s capital Seoul had to order all entertainment venues, including clubs and bars, on Saturday to immediately halt business when a Covid-19 cluster infection was detected. in the popular multicultural neighborhood of Itaewon.

The order came after a cluster infection was detected from a patient who visited clubs and bars in Itaewon last weekend. A total of 27 Seoul residents traceable to the Itaewon group infection were confirmed positive for Covid-19 as of noon Saturday local time.

Seven new cases were added in Nepal on Saturday, bringing the case count to 109, said a senior official with the Nepalese Ministry of Health and Population.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Nepal had crossed the 100 marks on Thursday and the cases increased in recent weeks despite efforts by the Nepalese government to prevent the disease from spreading through measures such as a national blockade.

Malaysia reported 54 new cases and another Covid-19 death on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 6,589 and the total deaths to 108, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.
