PETALING JAYA: The government should provide the Covid-19 vaccine to all Malaysian citizens for free once it is available, says the MCA.

Your Youth boss, Datuk Nicole Wong (Photo) said it was the government’s responsibility to ensure the health and safety of the rakyat.

Malaysia is expected to receive a supply of the Covid-19 vaccine in the first quarter of next year, with the current estimate of a maximum price of RM 87.60 per dose.

“MCA Youth calls on the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), Khairy Jamaluddin, to make sure that the government provides free vaccines for all citizens.

“Our country can absorb this spending that prioritizes public health,” he said in a statement on Thursday (November 5).

She said that in addition to the front-line, priority should be given to high-risk groups such as the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

The government had previously committed to prioritizing 3% of the population, which comprises leaders from the health and safety sectors, for the first batches of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“Our government is on the accelerated vaccine supply list because the relevant authorities have been actively involved in its investigation, a perfect example showing the initiative and proactivity of the government to safeguard Malaysian lives,” he added.

Khairy had previously said that the Finance Ministry had been told to set aside RM3bil to immunize 70% of the population against Covid-19.

He also said that Malaysia was in the final stages of negotiations to participate in the Covid-19 Vaccine Global Access (Covax) initiative.
