KOTA KINABALU: Two new groups have been registered in Sabah involving the close contacts of teachers and students in Sipitang and Keningau.

The two groups from Kampung Malaman in Sipitang involved six cases, while Kampung Padang Tembak in Keningau had six cases as well.

The minister in charge of Covid-19 affairs in Sabah, Datuk Masidi Manjun, said that for Kampung Malaman’s group, the index case was a pregnant elementary school teacher who tested positive for the virus before being admitted to the hospital recently. .

After testing positive, four other teachers, a canteen worker and seven students were found to have also contracted the virus.

As for the Keningau group, the index case was a 15-year-old student who traveled to Labuan on March 7.

The student had been to several of his relatives’ homes in Keningau, Masidi said.

“Authorities are still conducting contact tracing for both groups,” he said.

He said Sabah recorded 73 new cases and one death in Kudat district on Thursday (March 18).

A total of 374 patients are still being treated for the virus at various hospitals and treatment centers across the state.

The cumulative total of Covid-19 cases in Sabah is 54,074, 20 of them in intensive care and four with respiratory assistance.
