Covid-19: Three cellmates of a deceased prisoner test positive

GEORGE TOWN (Bernama): Three more inmates who tested positive for Covid-19 in Penang Pretrial Prison on Saturday (October 10) were placed in the same cell as the inmate who died from the disease on October 5.

Penang Pretrial Detention Director Mohamed Jusoh Ismail said there were 26 prisoners in the cell and the other 25 were immediately isolated and quarantined after the prison received information that the prisoner who died was positive for Covid. -19.

“As of yesterday (October 10), 18 people (including the deceased) had a positive result for Covid-19, while the other eight in the same cell showed no symptoms of the disease. However, they were still in quarantine. and isolated from other prisoners, “he said.

According to him, the 17 prisoners currently being treated at Penang Hospital are in stable condition.

He also said that the Covid-19 screening tests for staff and inmates in pretrial detention conducted since October 5 were expected to be completed on Sunday.

“I am relieved that none of the staff members have tested positive and that all inmates have completed the screening test today. I just hope there is no transmission in other cells,” he said.

He said that the situation in the prison was currently under control.

On Saturday, Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said three more Covid-19 cases related to the remand group were recorded, bringing the total to 18 cases, including the prisoner who died. October 5 – Bernama
