Covid-19: the one-year-old girl is the youngest to die of coronavirus in M’sia

PETALING JAYA: A one-year-old baby is now Malaysia’s youngest victim to have died from Covid-19, says Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

According to Noor Hisham, the one-year-old girl had initially received treatment in the Trauma and Emergency Department at Semporna Hospital on October 1.

“His health later deteriorated and he needed respiratory help. His Covid-19 test came back positive on Monday (October 5).

“She was pronounced dead on October 5 at 4.25 pm,” she said during a press conference that was broadcast live on Facebook on Tuesday (October 6).

Dr. Noor Hisham did not answer questions while conducting the self-quarantined press conference, as he was present at an October 3 meeting in the Prime Minister’s apartment, which was also attended by Minister of Religious Affairs Datuk Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, who later tested positive for Covid-19.

Malaysia recorded four deaths on Tuesday (October 6), bringing the cumulative death toll to 141.

The youngest victim to die from Covid-19 previously was a 23-year-old college student from Kota Samarahan, Sarawak.

Among others who died from Covid-19 was a 60-year-old local in Sandakan, where he was protected on September 25 and subsequently succumbed to Covid-19 on October 4.

A 60-year-old Malaysian man from Semporna also died of Covid-19 on October 4 after he was protected on September 1.

The fourth new death was that of an 85-year-old Malay man in Penang, who was found unconscious at 7 am on October 5 and pronounced dead at 7:50 am the same day at Pulau Penang Hospital.

“The Ministry of Health extends its condolences to all members of his family,” added Dr. Noor Hisham.

Malaysia recorded its largest increase in Covid-19 cases on Tuesday with a total of 691 new cases.
