Covid-19: the death toll exceeds 1,000 with 22 new deaths, 2,998 new cases registered

PETALING JAYA: The number of deaths from Covid-19 has passed the four-digit mark with 1,005 deaths recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic, says the Ministry of Health.

This comes as the country recorded 22 deaths due to the coronavirus on Wednesday (February 17), including a 100-year-old man from Selangor suffering from hypertension and asthma, said Tan Sri Health Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“Malaysia registered 2,998 new boxes of Covid-19, seven of which were imported.

“Of the new cases, 1,578 involved locals while 1,413 were foreigners,” he said in a statement.

He said a total of 5,709 recovered patients were discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Noor Hisham also said that about 231 patients are in intensive care units and 115 require ventilation.

He added that since the start of the pandemic, the country has seen 272,163 infections and 229,762 recoveries.

Dr Noor Hisham said that Selangor recorded the highest number of daily infections with 1,382 cases, of which 1,092 cases were detected in clusters of Covid-19 and close contact screenings.

He said Johor recorded the second highest number of daily infections with 436 cases, followed by Negri Sembilan with 233.
