PETALING JAYA: Higher education students residing in the Covid-19 red zones cannot return to campus to register for the new semester.

Minister of Higher Education Datuk Dr. Noraini Ahmad (Photo) said in a statement Sunday (September 27) that these students, both new and current, will need to register online.

“All higher education institutions are requested to postpone the face-to-face registration of new and old students from the red zone areas on their respective campuses, which is scheduled to begin in October,” he said.

He added that these students can return to their campuses following standard operating procedures (SOPs) once the Covid-19 situation has recovered in their places of origin.

To date, there are five red zones in Malaysia: Kota Setar, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna, and Tawau.

Students who do not reside in red zones can return to their campuses normally following the academic calendar of their institution.

“The ministry reiterates that all institutions of higher education have been instructed to conduct all academic activities on campus in full compliance with prescribed SOPs and prioritize security measures,” he said.

In July, Noraini said that higher education institutions can fully reopen in October and that they will be given the flexibility to determine the most suitable modes, including online learning, for their respective programs.
