KUCHING (September 30): Four new Covid-19 cases, all imported, including three from Sabah, were recorded in Sarawak today, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said.
Its president, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, said that the cumulative number of positive Covid-19 cases has risen to 713.
He also said today at the Covid-19 daily update press conference that the Sarawak Health Department now classifies import cases as ‘Import A’ for those from abroad and ‘Import B’ for cases from other Malaysian states. .
In case 710, Uggah said it was an Import B case involving a local woman who arrived at Miri airport on September 28 after returning from a visit to Kuala Lumpur.
Upon arrival at Miri airport, she was chosen to undergo a random Covid-19 rT-PCR test and the sample taken was positive on September 28.
Uggah said the case showed no signs or symptoms, and has now been admitted to Miri Hospital for further treatment.
Cases 711, 712 and 713 are also Import B cases, Uggah said, involving locals returning from Sabah.
Case 711, a vocational institute student who flew to Miri from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on September 28, tested positive for Covid-19 after taking the rT-PCR test again in Sarawak.
Uggah explained that the case underwent rT-PCR testing in Sabah on September 24, but was negative.
As the test took more than three days before entering Sarawak, he said the patient was asked to undergo another test upon arrival in Miri prior to home quarantine.
“The test this time was positive. Upon investigation, the case was also found to have flu on September 24, ”Uggah said.
In case 712, it concerned a security personnel who had just returned from his service in Sabah for the recently concluded Sabah state elections.
Uggah said that this case left for Sabah on September 25 along with other personnel and returned to Sarawak on a special flight to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Kuching on September 28.
“All of these personnel were ordered to undergo a 14-day quarantine and to collect samples for the rT-PCR test on the second and the tenth day.
“This case was found to test positive on the second day, which was September 29. It did not show any signs or symptoms,” Uggah said, adding that the case was referred to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.
He also said that a total of 501 members of the security forces returning from Sabah had undergone the first stage of the rT-PCR screening test.
In case 713, Uggah said it was a trainee from the Ministry of Health Training Institute who had just returned from Menggatal, Sabah, on vacation.
He said the case entered Sarawak on September 27 at Kuching International Airport after flying in from Kota Kinabalu.
Like case 711, the case was also required to undergo another rT-PCR test even though a previous test taken on September 22 was negative, due to exceeding the three-day period before the flight to Sarawak.
“The repeat test conducted on September 27 was positive for Covid-19. The case also showed no signs or symptoms, ”Uggah said.
The chief deputy minister also said that contact tracing of all these cases is now being carried out.
In another matter, Uggah said no new recoveries were recorded today either, keeping the number of recoveries and patients discharged with Covid-19 from hospitals in Sarawak at 682 or 95.65 percent of the state’s total cases.
However, he said that one case, which was registered as a case from Sandakan, Sabah, but was treated at Bintulu Hospital, had recovered and was allowed to be discharged today.
“Due to the increase of four new cases today, the total number of Covid-19 patients still treated in the isolation wards of the hospital is now 12 people. They comprise six at Sarawak General Hospital, five at Miri Hospital, and one at Bintulu Hospital.
“None of them are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” he said.
He also said that 14 new cases of Persons Under Investigation (PUI) were registered today, with one still waiting for the result of the laboratory test while the rest tested negative.
With no reported deaths, the number of deaths from Covid-19 in the state remains unchanged at 19 or 2.66 percent of total cases.
On a related matter, Uggah said that Kuching and Lawas remained the two districts with the yellow status after registering one and three cases of local infection respectively in the last 14 days.
The other 38 districts maintain their green status, he said.
It also revealed that the police issued only one composite advisory involving an individual in Kota Samarahan for failure to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
He added that the police will continue to ensure that standard operating procedures are adhered to, especially the use of face masks in public places.
