GEORGE TOWN: Seven active groups have been identified in the state so far, says Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow said they were the Penang Remand Prison group, the Seberang Prai Prison group, the Bayan group, the Tembaga group, the Permatang group, the Alma group and the last one, the Intan group.
“Sub-district 12 and sub-district 13 are now Covid-19 hot spots distinct from the George Town sub-district where the Penang pretrial detention is located, as well as sub-district 6 (Seberang Prai prison) after 41 cases were reported in these areas, “it said in a statement on Monday (November 9).
Chow said the government has implemented the Enhanced Movement Control Order (MCO) in the Penang Pretrial Prison and its premises starting on October 15 and ending on November 11.
He said this was one of the steps taken to prevent the virus outbreak prior to the implementation of the conditional MCO in all states except Kelantan, Pahang and Perlis.
He said the government has also strengthened the MCO in Seberang Prai Prison and its neighborhoods from October 22 to November 18, and the improved MCO in sub-district 12 from November 6 to November 19, to restrict the movement of the public. in the affected areas.
He said that during the special meeting of the state security council committee on November 9, the state health department proposed that the improved MCO for Penang Pretrial Detention and its dependencies, which was supposed to end on November 11, was not extend.
However, it has been proposed that areas should adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP).
Chow, who chaired the meeting, also wants the state health department to continue to monitor and consider the need to enforce the improved MCO in Subdistrict 13.
He said this is to prevent the spread of the Intan cluster where
most cases are in subdistrict 13.
He added that the committee also proposed that the improved MCO for Seberang Prai prison and its rooms be extended when it ends on November 18.
“The state National Security Council will bring these suggestions to the federal level for consideration,” he said.
On the operation of the private nurseries that will be allowed during the conditional period of the MCO, the state government has also been asked to present an appeal for the centers to be able to function as the parents still need to go to work.
Regarding the guidelines for religious activities, the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department and the state administration will adjust the regulations, including finalizing the SOP for the celebration of Deepavali.
He said that an announcement will also be made from time to time by both the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) regarding the SOP, such as the opening of parks and recreation areas in their respective localities.
On police roadblocks, Chow said a total of 31 roadblocks will be mounted in the state during the conditional MCO involving 1,294 officers and personnel comprising the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Armed Forces of Malaysia.
