Covid-19: Screening of all foreign workers could overwhelm state hospitals, says Sabah’s Health Department

KOTA KINABALU (Bernama): The Sabah Department of Health (JKNS) says it will not be able to screen for Covid-19 on all foreign workers in the state if that is a prerequisite for allowing economic sectors to return to operate.

Its director, Datuk, Dr. Christina Rundi, said government hospitals in Sabah would face many requests if controls were made mandatory for all foreign workers.

“In stages, we can do it, but if it is a prerequisite (for the economic sector) to operate again, then it will be a problem.”

“We cannot meet the demand if it is going to be done by (government) hospitals because we have our own patients,” he told reporters on Tuesday (May 5).

On Monday (May 4), Chief Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government would compel all foreign workers in Malaysia, including those in the construction, manufacturing and commerce sectors, to undergoing a Covid-19 swab test in an attempt to help slow the spread of the disease.

Sabah’s Health and Welfare Minister Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung was informed by a news portal that the state would not be able to carry out tests on 100,000 foreign workers in the state as there were not enough reagent test kits Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Dr. Christina said the Department was facilitating some employers who wanted to reopen their businesses and advised them to comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) since the Covid-19 pandemic was not yet over.

“Everyone should understand this situation. It is not just about getting back to work in the normal way, but employers must make sure that checks are carried out, social distancing is practiced, and facial masks and disinfectants are used,” he said. – Bernama
