KUCHING (October 2): Sarawak border posts have been closed to Indonesia and the Philippines until December 3 this year, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Masing said amid concern over the spread of cases of Covid-19 in the two countries.
Masing, who heads a border posts committee, said the decision to close points of entry, including ports, for the two countries was made two days ago.
He also urged the state disaster management committee (SDMC) to be strict with standard operating procedure for visitors from Sabah and the peninsula, where Covid-19 cases have recently increased.
“Sarawak has a choice if we want to protect our people from Covid-19. It appears that a second wave of coronavirus may strike Malaysia, ”she said in a statement, adding that sanitation should be carried out in workplaces and plantations that employ foreign workers.
As of September 30, the Philippines had registered 2,391 new cases for a total of 311,694 cases, while Indonesia had 4,284 cases and a total of 287,008 cases.
Masing, who is also the Minister for Port Infrastructure and Development, warned that Sarawak could not afford to lower its guard.

Yesterday, SDMC announced that the Sarawak borders had been closed to non-Sarawakians from Sabah and Labuan from October 4-18.
While Sarawak residents can still return from state and federal territory, they must first submit an application through the ‘enterSarawak’ app and complete the electronic health declaration form.
They will also be quarantined in quarantine centers for 14 days and will have to undergo the Covid-19 RT-PCR test on the second and tenth day of quarantine. The cost of quarantine and testing will continue to be borne by the state government.
Sarawak did not register any new Covid-19 cases yesterday, but Sabah had 118 cases. Yesterday’s 260 Malaysia cases were the second highest single-day Covid-19 case count since June 4 with 277 cases.
There have been 136 deaths from the virus in the country out of a total of 11,484 cases.
