KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Prisons has been told to develop a new standard operating procedure (SOP) to curb the spread of Covid-19 among inmates in prisons across the country, Chief Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said .

He said this was agreed at the Special Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation of the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) after prisons and detention centers contributed greatly to the growing number of positive Covid-19 cases in recent years. time.

“The old POE cannot be used to bring detainees to court for prosecution. The need to physically carry detainees and handcuffs, that’s the old POE. The same with the prisons, they (the inmates) are all placed too close to each other, that is the old POE and one of the causes of the positive cases of Covid-19 in the prisons. This can be prevented if there is a new SOP, ”he said.

He said this at a virtual press conference held from his home that was broadcast live on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Defense.

Yesterday, of the 691 positive cases of Covid-19, the highest daily count on record so far, 394 cases involved prisons in Kedah and another seven cases were from the detention center in Taiping, Perak.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said police arrested 357 people yesterday for mocking the RMCO, with 320 people aggravated, 35 in pre-trial detention and two released on bail.
