PUTRAJAYA: Covid-19 cases in Malaysia continued to rise and the Ministry of Health announced 182 new infections in the country on Friday (September 11).
This is only the second time that the daily increase in cases was three figures; the last time was on Tuesday (September 8) when the country registered 100 new cases.
Prior to that, the last time the number of cases was in triple digits was on June 4 before the recovery motion control order (MCO), with 277 reported cases.
In a statement on Friday, Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured) said that of the 182 cases, only one is an imported case, while the rest are local broadcasts.
Most of the cases were from the Benteng LD (Lahad Datu) group in Sabah, with 167 new infections recorded within 24 hours.
The total number of cases in the group has doubled to 337, currently the largest and most active group in the entire country.
Most of the patients are detained from Tawau Prison and Lahad Datu Police Headquarters.
The Sungai group in Kedah, which originated from a health worker attached to a medical center, recorded 14 new cases on Friday.
The group now has a total of 54 cases.
Tawau Prison and Kota Setar district in Kedah, where the two groups are reported, have been subjected to an enhanced movement control (MCO) order since 12:01 am on Friday.
Malaysia also discharged 14 patients, meaning the total number of recoveries is 9,181 or a rate of 93.59%, on Friday.
The total number of active cases in the country has now skyrocketed to 501 cases.
Altogether, the total number of cases in the country since the outbreak began in January is 9,810.
Currently, nine people are being treated in intensive care units, and five of them require respiratory assistance.
No deaths were reported, which means that the death toll from Covid-19 in the country remains at 128 or at a rate of 1.30%.
