PUTRAJAYA: There is no need to panic shop for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations as stores may open, says Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director general of Health said that such a phenomenon would only cause large crowds to emerge, which in turn would expose people to the risk of Covid-19 infection.

“Under the implementation of the conditional movement control order (MCO), the economic sector can operate.

“If the stores are open as usual, then there is no need to panic. Otherwise this will only create congestion and the likelihood of Covid-19 spreading is high, ”Dr Noor Hisham said at the ministry’s Covid-19 press conference here on Monday (Nov 9).

In a question and answer session with the press, Dr. Noor Hisham was asked to comment on the large number of people shopping for Deepavali at access points like Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur.

The government has ordered no “balik kampung” trips for those in MCO conditional and upgraded areas to celebrate Deepavali, which falls on November 14.

Those celebrating the festival in the MCO’s recovery and conditional areas can attend special prayers, but only on the first day of the celebration, with strict standard operating procedures (SOPs).

In conditional MCO and recovery areas, up to 20 people are allowed to gather on land-holding properties at any time during the celebration.

Those who live in apartments of less than 1,500 square feet can have no more than 10 guests and those who live in units of 2,500 square feet or more can have a maximum of 15 guests at a time.

However, those in locations under the enhanced MCO cannot have home visits for Deepavali.
