PUTRAJAYA: So far, there are no Covid-19 infections in the Teratai group community, the Health Ministry said.

Tan Sri Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said infections in the group are only among workers and their close contacts.

“Among the positive cases, there are 164 Malaysians who are employees of the company and live abroad in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. They infected their family members when they returned home. There are about 71 family members who have been infected, “said Dr. Noor Hisham.

“But outside of the community, we have not detected any infections,” Dr. Noor Hisham said at the ministry’s Covid-19 press conference here on Wednesday (Nov 25).

The Teratai group, which originates from the workers at glove maker Top Glove Corp Bhd, is currently the largest Covid-19 infection group in Malaysia since the pandemic began.

As of Wednesday, the cluster has 4,063 positive cases linked to it.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that employers should regularly send their employees for Covid-19 testing, especially those in the construction industry who have a lot of foreign workers under them.

“Our suggestion for industries within the Covid-19 red zones is that they carry out regular checks on their employees. We advise them to commit to private healthcare for regular testing of their employees, ”said Dr. Noor Hisham.

He added that the application of Law 446, or the Minimum Standards of Housing and Services for Workers Act of 1990, is important for the labor industry.

“We hope to be able to implement Law 446, this is to ensure that the welfare and health of foreign workers are taken care of from time to time. This is the suggestion of our ministry, and the implementation is in charge of the Ministry of Human Resources ”, he said.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that around 11,215 Top Glove workers have been identified for screening. As of November 25 and 6, 506 workers have been examined.

“Those who test positive are admitted to hospitals. Those who test negative but have been exposed to positive cases should undergo a 14-day quarantine, ”said Dr. Noor Hisham.

He added that the company has closed 20 factories, while another eight will follow suit in stages.

“However, the operation of some machinery cannot be stopped, so it will still be allowed to operate, but at a minimal rate,” he said.
