PUTRAJAYA (Nov 27): The government is actively negotiating with 10 of the 12 companies whose Covid-19 vaccine is in the third phase of the clinical study, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said the government, through the Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee Special Committee, would evaluate all vaccines, including those from Pfizer, to ensure they are safe for use.
“There are currently 12 vaccine producers whose vaccine is in phase three trials and the Malaysian government is actively negotiating with 10 of them.
“The government is going to buy Covid-19 vaccines from multiple sources to guarantee enough vaccines for the country. I have been told that we need vaccine supply for at least 60% of Malaysia’s population, which means they will be immunized between 18 and 19 million people. To start with, “he said today at a virtual press conference here.
He also said that there would be no obstacles for private health facilities to obtain vaccines from approved companies and that the Ministry of Health (MoH) could also supply the private sector if there is a surplus of the vaccine.
He added that the government also encouraged vaccine-producing companies to set up factories in the country, adding that special and interesting incentives would be offered to these foreign firms.
Aware of the importance of fighting the pandemic, he said that the country was also willing to cooperate with any party to become a vaccine producer in the future.
“We have no problem cooperating in the early stage if there are companies out there, like China, that are interested in finding partners to carry out research and development… which we encourage.
“In fact, there are some incentives and we hope one day to become vaccine producers and not just consumers of medical supplies,” he said.
