KUCHING: Meradong in central Sarawak is now a yellow zone after three locally transmitted Covid-19 cases were reported in the district on Friday (January 1), says the state disaster management committee.

He said the three cases were relatives of a positive case detected on December 29 after returning from Kuala Lumpur on December 19.

They were admitted to a quarantine center on December 29 and examined on December 30, with positive results on December 31.

“One of the cases suffered a loss of smell while another coughed. The third case has no symptoms.

“All three cases have been admitted to the isolation ward at Sibu Hospital for treatment,” the committee said in a statement.

The Meradong cases are among eight new Covid-19 cases reported in Sarawak on Friday, bringing the state’s confirmed case count to 1,125.

Three more cases of local transmission were reported in Kuching and one in Bintulu, while another case in Miri involved an official returning from his hometown of Banting, Selangor.

The committee said the three Kuching cases were close contacts with each other, while Bintulu’s case was a Chinese national who underwent a Covid-19 test before returning to his country.

In addition to Meradong, Kuching, Bintulu, Sibu and Lawas, the districts remain yellow zones with between one and four local broadcasts in the last 14 days.

The remaining 35 districts of the state are green areas with no cases of local transmission.

Meanwhile, the committee said that all Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) implemented last year would remain in effect until March 31.

This is in line with the federal government’s decision to extend the recovery MCO until the end of March.

The committee also reminded Sarawak residents to continue to comply with the SOP and health councils as local broadcasts continue to be reported.

“We must remain vigilant to break the chain of transmission, especially during the festive seasons,” he said.
