KUALA LUMPUR While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought hardship and economic turmoil, the silver lining is that theft cases have plummeted by nearly half this year compared to 2019.
Director of the CID of the federal police Commissioner Datuk Huzir Mohamed (pix), who today released crime statistics between January and November 15 this year, said 1,160 cases of theft were reported across the country compared to 2,216 cases for the same period last year.
“It is a decrease of 47.65%. We arrested 893 suspects for robbery cases last year, while 527 were carried out this year in the same period. Statistics show that recent claims that crime is increasing due to unemployment as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic are not true, “he said yesterday.
Huzir said the overall crime rate also showed a sharp drop of 23%.
He said 56,117 cases were reported nationwide this year compared to 72,836 cases last year.
A video of a compilation of recorded street crimes warning the public not to be complacent and fall victim to the fall has been circulating on social media since last week, raising concern among netizens.
“We recognize that there is concern on the part of the public about the possibility that crimes due to unemployment will increase, even more so when these videos are published on social networks. With statistics showing a decrease in crime rates, the police will continue to reduce them with more comprehensive action. We also urge the public not to create or share content on crime trends or statistics that are not supported or verified by authorities. This inaccurate information can cause concern among the public and generate negative perceptions in law enforcement agencies, especially the police, ”Huzir said.
