LABUAN (Bernama): A hypermarket and two supermarkets here were ordered to be temporarily closed after a customer who tested positive for COVID-19 recently visited the facility.
Labuan Health Director Dr. Ismuni Bohari said the three-day closure notice issued on Saturday (October 17) morning was to facilitate the sanitation work.
“We must be strict to ensure full compliance regarding sanitation … the well-being and safety of the people must not be compromised by the recent increase in Covid-19 cases on the island,” he told Bernama on Saturday.
He said those who have shopped at these facilities in the past few days and shown symptoms related to Covid-19 should immediately undergo testing at the Membedai Health Clinic.
“Those who want to be tested can do so, but if they do not have symptoms, it will not be necessary,” he added.
Personnel at the three facilities most vulnerable to infection, such as those at the counters, were ordered to undergo testing and home quarantine.
Labuan had been placed under a two-week conditional movement control order (MCO) from Saturday to October 30, along with two other federal territories, namely Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (from October 14).
Labuan, Malaysia’s international commercial and financial center and hub for oil and gas, has been seeing a daily increase in cases for the past week, bringing the count to 111 cases as of Friday (October 16).
The duty-free island faces three active groups: Saguking with five cases, the Bah Bangat and Bah Bundle groups with 11 and nine cases, respectively.
“We are looking out for people who are positive for Covid-19 but have not been screened. It is a difficult task, but it must be accomplished,” said Dr. Ismuni.
Meanwhile, two high schools and an elementary school here closed last week after three students and one pupil tested positive. – Bernama
