PUTRAJAYA: Kota Setar district to be placed under an enhanced motion control order (MCO) from midnight Friday (Sept. 11) to Sept. 23 following a spike in Covid-19 cases, the minister says Principal Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The defense minister said the improved MCO will involve 366,787 residents who will not be allowed to leave the area and outsiders will not be allowed in.

“We will also not allow residents who live in the affected area to go to work. We hope that employers will note that this is a government order and that their employees residing in Kota Setar should not be penalized for not showing up for work.

“Educational institutions, recreational, social and sports activities, as well as religious activities in mosques and places of worship cannot be carried out during the enhanced CAM,” he said on Thursday (September 10).

Ismail Sabri said the Malaysian-Thai border at Bukit Kayu Hitam will not see any cross-border activity during the 14-day shutdown.

Aside from clinics and hospitals, which can operate 24 hours a day, other commercial activities such as restaurants, roadside stalls, various stores, and gas stations can operate from 8 am to 8 pm.

“Only one person per family will be able to leave the house and run errands and get essential items for the family,” said the minister.

He also announced that an improved MCO will be imposed in Tawau Prison from September 11 to September 23, affecting inmates, prison officials and their families.

During this period, no visits will be allowed.

“There is no need for the people of Tawau to worry about the Covid-19 cases in the district as the cases are only limited to the prison and the chances of it spreading to the community are limited,” Ismail Sabri said.
