PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has increased bed capacity in six government facilities to treat Covid-19 patients in the Klang Valley due to the recent increase in cases.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that in the early stages of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry had only used Sungai Buloh Hospital and Kuala Lumpur Hospital as Covid-treatment hospitals. 19, while the National Leprosy Control Center (PKKN) was used as a quarantine and low-risk center for category one and two patients in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Putrajaya.

However, he said that the increase in Covid-19 patients has resulted in the high rates of bed use in these hospitals.

As such, he said, the Ministry has increased the bed capacity at Sungai Buloh Hospital to 630 beds as a precaution to accommodate more cases.

He added that the bed capacity at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital has been increased to 831 beds, while the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital has been converted into a Covid-19 hybrid hospital with a capacity of 230 beds.

“We have also opened eight blocks at the Ministry’s Sungai Buloh training institute as a low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment center with a capacity of 2,400 beds.

“PKKN will continue to be used as a low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment center with a capacity of 648 beds,” he told a news conference on Wednesday (November 18).

Dr Noor Hisham said that this strategic planning to increase beds involving all six facilities, including the Tuanku Mizan military hospital, was done in collaboration with various agencies, including the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the Army, Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department, and others.

He said that the Ministry has established the Central Region Covid-19 Unified Command Center with the help of the National Security Council to facilitate the governance and operations of all hospitals and facilities in Selangor, KL and Putrajaya.

“It will be led by Selangor Health Director Datuk Indera, Dr. Sha’ari Ngadiman, who will be assisted by Sungai Buloh Hospital emergency specialist Dr. Sarah Shaikh Abdul Karim,” he said.
