PUTRAJAYA: The increase in Covid-19 cases in Peninsular Malaysia has been attributed to people with a history of travel to Sabah, says the Health Ministry.

Tan Sri Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that since September 20, a total of 63 cases involved people who had just returned from Sabah.

“Today (September 29), there are only 17 cases involving people with a history of travel to Sabah, making a total of 63 cases as of September 20,” Dr. Noor Hisham said at a press conference. .

Nine of those 17 cases were detected in Selangor, while Kedah, Perak, Melaka, Kelantan, Perlis, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur had one case each.

Two Covid-19 groups, the Jalan Apas group in Klang, Selangor and the new Bakawali group in Johor, also involved people returning from Sabah.

The Bakawali group involved a husband and wife who traveled to Semporna, Sabah from September 13-18.

“On September 24, both cases showed symptoms of cough, flu and fever.

“On September 26 they tested positive for Covid-19 and were admitted to Enche Besar Hajjah Kalsom Hospital in Johor.

“An evaluation of close contacts found two more positive cases in this group,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.

Similarly, the Jalan Apas group announced Monday also involved a husband and wife couple who traveled to Tawau and Semporna from September 13-16.

The cluster currently has nine positive cases.

Sabah recorded 73 of the country’s 101 new infections on Tuesday.

The Bangau-Bangau group in Semporna saw 51 new cases, bringing their total to 276.
