KOTA SAMARAHAN: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pix) said that the government is spending a lot to fight the Covid-19 pandemic because it is important to save lives and the national economy.

The prime minister said the pandemic was very challenging because it posed a threat to people’s lives and hit the economy, forcing the government to spend huge amounts of money to buy medicines, guarantee enough hospital beds and increase the number of doctors and nurses.

“We do this because saving all lives is important. The government has already spent RM7 billion to RM8 billion to overcome the Covid-19 problem, and this figure does not include money to buy vaccines, ”he said in a meeting with people at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG ). Tun Abdul Razak Campus here today.

He said the government had to act quickly to reserve vaccines for the national immunization program because people’s lives are precious.

Muhyiddin expressed his satisfaction with Sarawak’s vaccination program and promised to ask the Health Ministry to send more Covid-19 vaccines to the state.

He said the country had remained peaceful and united despite dealing with the unprecedented challenges posed by the spread of Covid-19 last year.

Muhyiddin said he had to deal with the pandemic at the time he took over the country’s administration after the previous prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, resigned after a political crisis.

“A decision had to be made to enforce the Movement Control Order (MCO) to keep people safe from the pandemic across the country. Although its impact (MCO) was great, its objective was to protect people ”, he added.

He said the government had to strike a balance between protecting lives and livelihoods, as the country suffered losses of 2.4 billion ringgit per day during the MCO last year, leading to the closure of almost all sectors. of the economy.

The government had announced several aid packages worth 300 billion ringgit to help groups affected by the pandemic, and the situation was recovering with almost all sectors of the economy already in operation, except industries such as tourism. he added.

“We are back in business and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Muhyiddin said, adding that the country’s administration must be strong and uninterrupted so that the government can fully focus on managing the country and the people effectively.

In this regard, he urged the people of Sarawak to continue their support for the current federal government, so that it can continue to help the state achieve its vision of becoming a developed state by 2030.

Referring to his last visit to the state, the first full visit since he became prime minister in March last year, Muhyiddin said there was an extraordinary feeling this time, as he was looking forward to returning to his hometown.

“It is very special. I was moved when the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) said that GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) will continue to give me strong support as Prime Minister, ”he said.

The people-meet session was one of the programs he attended on his hectic working visit to Sarawak, which began yesterday, and Muhyiddin is expected to inspect the Sarawak General Hospital improvement project this afternoon before returning to Kuala Lumpur. -Named
