PETALING JAYA: A blockade during the next Hari Raya could be a good preventive measure against the spread of Covid-19, says Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood.

The founder of Mercy Malaysia, who is the Prime Minister’s special adviser on public health, expressed concern after the increase in cases in South Korea and Germany.

“Very concerned to see the increase in cases in South Korea and Germany and how iftar (breaking fast) meetings proved deadly.

“If we don’t take steps to prevent the spread (of Covid-19), we can lose all the profits made. God forbid.

“Let’s be vigilant. Perhaps a crash during Raya is a good preventive measure?

“Let’s preserve our progress!” Dr. Jemilah said in a Twitter post on Thursday (May 14).

He had also tagged the CEO of Health, Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

On May 10, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had announced an extension of the Conditional Movement Control Order (MCO) to June 9.

Muhyiddin, in his announcement, reminded Malaysians that interstate movement is still prohibited.

However, he said visiting close neighbors and families in the same state will be allowed during the festival, as long as there are a maximum of 20 people gathered at any one time.

Hari Raya is expected to fall on May 23 or May 24 of this year.
