Covid-19 deaths in the US exceed 270,000: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK: Deaths from Covid-19 in the United States topped 270,000 on Tuesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, the Xinhua news agency reports.

With the number of cases nationwide topping 13.6 million, the death toll in the United States rose to 270,003 at 5:26 p.m. local time (2226 GMT), according to data from the CSSE.

New York State reported 34,618 deaths, at the top of the US statewide death list.Texas had the second highest number of deaths, with 21,946. The states of California, Florida and New Jersey confirmed more than 17,000 deaths, the tally showed.

States with more than 10,000 deaths also include Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.

The United States remains the country hardest hit by the pandemic, with the highest number of cases and deaths in the world, accounting for more than 18 percent of global deaths.

An updated model forecast from the University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected a total of 470,974 deaths from Covid-19 in the United States by March 1, 2021, based on the current projection scenario.

Hospitalizations in the United States reached a record 96,039, according to a daily update published by The Covid Tracking Project on November 30.

The project noted on its Twitter account that hospitalizations have doubled since November 1 and tripled since October 1 in the United States and that 100,000 hospitalizations may be around the corner in the coming days.

Experts warned that deaths from the American daily Covid-19 will even rise to a higher level in December, as the country is expected to witness a new wave of infections in the coming weeks, following travel and national meetings during Thanksgiving holidays. – Called
