A CONSTRUCTION site in Jalan Ampang where 27 cases of Covid-19 were detected among its workers two weeks ago was slapped with a 30-day closure notice by the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) on Sunday (May 10).
DBKL officers in an operation called Operation Covid-19, posted a red notice at the site entrance informing the closure of the area and sealed the site with yellow tape at 1pm.
A DBKL spokesperson said the notice was issued under Section 70 of the Streets and Drainage Act of 1974 and is effective immediately.
“The crime was that they had built temporary accommodation for their workers in the basement of the building (at the construction site) without the permission of the mayor of Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
“We do not approve of these things and hope that others will take it as a lesson,” added the spokesman. The well-being and health of workers are also important and should be prioritized. “
Last week, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa warned developers and contractors that the city will shut down downtown construction sites under its statutes if they do not ensure that their site and its workers are free from Covid-19.
Annuar also expressed disappointment at some developers who were unable to provide adequate accommodation or dormitories for their workers.
He warned them that if they compromise the health of their workers, action will be taken against them.
