PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Building more hospitals will not solve the Covid-19 problem if the public does not change their behavior, says Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood (Photo).
The Prime Minister’s Special Public Health Adviser said that when dealing with the pandemic, it must start with the public practicing Covid-19 preventive measures and influencing those around them.
“We have to change our behaviors. We really have to help, think about frontline workers who are struggling, overworked and depressed,” he said on Friday (January 29) in a webinar titled “Business in the Age of Covid-19: Restoring the business scenario with Covid-19 “.
Moderated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Water, Datuk Seri, Dr. Zaini Ujang, the session also featured the Executive Director of Pemandu Associates Sdn Bhd, Datuk Seri Idris Jala.
Dr. Jemilah also expressed her greatest concern that less developed nations had limited access to Covid-19 vaccines as rich countries were buying more than they needed.
“Where are we going to get our vaccines if everything has been monopolized by the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union? Where is the possibility that the less developed world will get this?
“Almost like apartheid, you know, only people who have a vaccine certificate can travel and do business when the developing world has no access,” he said, adding that the situation required a reestablishment of core values and humanity.
Meanwhile, Jala said that Covid-19 was a massive challenge for businesses with statistics showing that around 34,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country had closed, as of October last year.
When asking companies to reinvent themselves by practicing ESSA (Eliminate, Simplify, Standardize and Automate), Jala said: “I always tell people, in a crisis like this, don’t waste the opportunity; people know that it is necessary to do ESSA I think it is essential that all companies go through an ESSA process, while they are still locked up. “
He proposed that government and businesses take a collaborative approach to move towards the digital front, noting that last year alone, Amazon saw a 34% increase in global sales to US $ 330 billion (RM1.34 trillion). , while Alibaba achieved US $ 74.bil (RM300bil) in sales in just one day in November.
“This is a great opportunity for Malaysia to move forward on the digital front. It cannot just be done by the government, sitting alone and doing all the infrastructure. Businesses should come and seize this opportunity, rather than crying over Covid-19,” he said. – Bernama
