PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Armed Forces agreed to establish a Provisional Treatment Center (MTC) in Kepayan Prison to support the Covid-19 medical facility in the prison, says Defense Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The decision came after presentation by the Sabah National Security Council (NSC) during a special meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on Tuesday (October 20).

Ismail said the MTC is necessary as the number of Covid-19 cases in the prison has increased and it will serve as a quarantine and treatment center for inmates who test positive.

The MTC at Kepayan Prison is similar to the one previously established at Pokok Sena Prison in Kedah.

“The armed forces field hospital in Tawau will also start operating this week,” the chief minister said at his daily press conference on Tuesday.

He said the field hospital began receiving patients unrelated to Covid-19 on Tuesday.

“The operation of the field hospital will focus on non-Covid-19 patients, while the government hospital will focus on the treatment of Covid-19 patients,” he added.

Ismail also said that if the number of cases in Sabah continues to rise, the armed forces will be ready to establish more field hospitals in areas advised by the Ministry of Health.
