KUCHING (Oct 31): Sarawak today registered nine new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 881.

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily Covid-19 update, six of the cases are in the Kuching district, two in the Miri district, and one in the Samarahan district.

The committee said that five of the new Kuching cases were from the Green Hill Cluster.

Two of them involved staff working in one of the locations sponsored by one of the positive cases of the cluster. Both staff members showed symptoms of fever.

Two other cases in this cluster are social contacts, who have a history of having known several positive cases in this cluster.

One case is a close contact with case 855 that was reported positive for Covid-19 on October 29. This case was asymptomatic.

SDMC added that all of these cases underwent screening between October 29 and 30, and their positive results were released on October 30.

Another case from Kuching is that of a local man who had close contact with Case 847 and tested positive on October 29. He underwent the rT-PCR test on October 29 and tested positive on October 30. He showed no symptoms.

SDMC said the Department of Health is conducting contact tracing on this case.

Meanwhile, of the two cases in Miri, one dates back to the Green Hill group in Kucing. SDMC said this case involved an entrepreneur who was a social contact on Case 829 who tested positive for Covid-19 on October 28.

The businessman had been in Kuching since mid-September and returned to Miri on October 26 by car.

He underwent an exam on October 27 at a private hospital in Miri while showing cough symptoms, and his results came back positive on October 28. He was admitted to Miri Hospital for further treatment and was classified as an Import C case for being infected in another district.

Miri’s second case involved a local man who showed severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). He was tested on October 30 and tested positive the same day.

SDMC said the case has no history of traveling to high-risk areas or having been in contact with positive cases.

Until the source of his infection is identified, the committee said, it will be classified as a local case. The Department of Health continues its investigation and contact tracing for this case, the SDMC added.

A case in the Samarahan district involved a man with a travel history to Melaka. SDMC said the man, who worked in Kota Samarahan, arrived at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on October 28 and was immediately swab tested before undergoing a 14-day quarantine.

The test result of the case came back positive on October 30. He was asymptomatic and has been admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment.

SDMC said the Health Department is conducting contact tracing on the case, and the case has been categorized as an Import B case for being imported from a high-risk area.

In another update, 114 active cases are being treated at hospitals across the state today, with 97 at SGH, 2 at Sibu Hospital, 1 at Bintulu Hospital, and 14 at Miri Hospital.

The SDMC also registered 14 new cases of persons under investigation (PUI), and one is still awaiting the results of laboratory tests.

On that note, the committee also recorded 65 new cases of people under surveillance (PUS) in the state today, bringing a total of 2,327 quarantined cases at 24 hotels across the state.

The death toll in Sarawak remains at 19.
