KUCHING (Dec 23): Sarawak today registered four new positive imported Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 1,094.
Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said two cases were recorded in Kuching, while Miri and Tebedu districts each recorded one case.
“Case 1,091 involved a Sarawak man who had undergone a Covid-19 screening test after returning from a high-risk area for Covid-19 infection, namely Kuala Lumpur. He entered Sarawak through Miri Airport on December 18.
“The patient was ordered to undergo mandatory quarantine in a quarantine center in the city of Miri. He was examined for the infectious disease on December 20 and the test results came back positive, “he said today at a press conference here.
He said the case has symptoms of fever and has since been referred and admitted to Miri Hospital for further treatment.
Contact tracing of all contacts close to this case is in full swing. The patient has been listed as an imported case as he was infected when he was in Kuala Lumpur.
In case 1,092, Uggah, who is also chair of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said that this case involved an Indonesian woman who underwent a Covid-19 screening test after being detained by authorities. while attempting to illegally enter Sarawak using an illegal border road (‘jalan tikus’) on December 21.
“The results of the investigation found that the case has a working history at Miri for the past six years.
“On October 12, the case legally returned to Makassar, Indonesia and on December 20, she entered Sarawak illegally using a ‘jalan tikus’ and was later arrested by the Sarawak authorities,” he said.
He said the case underwent a Covid-19 test on December 22 and tested positive for the virus.
“The case is asymptomatic and has been referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment,” he said, noting that further investigation and contact tracing is underway.
He added that this case is classified as an imported case since she was infected in another country.
On the two imported cases in Kuching, Uggah said that the 1,093 and 1,094 cases were siblings who were screened for Covid-19 after returning from Sabah.
“Both cases entered Sarawak through Kuching International Airport on December 21 and were instructed to undergo mandatory quarantine at a quarantine center in Kuching City.
“They underwent the RTK Antigen test on December 11 and 19 in Sabah before entering the state. At that time, his test results were negative.
“But when they were tested again for Covid-19 on December 21, their test results this time were positive,” he said.
Both cases are asymptomatic and have been referred and admitted to SGH for further treatment.
“Contact tracing for these cases is in full swing and they have been classified as Import B as they were infected while in a high-risk Covid-19 infection area,” Uggah added.
Meanwhile, Uggah said that no Covid-19 patients have recovered today, leaving the total number of recoveries in the state at 1,060 or 96.89 percent of total cases.
“There are currently 15 patients receiving treatment at hospitals across the state, 10 at SGH, three at Sibu Hospital and two at Miri Hospital.
“There are six new cases of persons under investigation (PUI) reported today and no PUI pending laboratory test results,” he said.
Since the first positive case of Covid-19 was reported on March 13, the state has recorded a total of 19 deaths.
Sibu and Kuching districts remain as yellow zones with a total of three local infection cases reported in the last 14 days, namely two cases in Sibu and one in Kuching.
