KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 9.6 million people or 30 percent of Malaysia’s population are expected to be vaccinated against Covid-19 next year, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

The prime minister said that the government had signed two agreements for the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.

Yesterday, he announced that the government had signed a preliminary purchase agreement with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to obtain a supply of 12.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to meet the immunization needs of 20 percent or 6.4 million. of the population of Malaysia.

In addition to the agreement with Pfizer, the government also signed an agreement with the COVAX facility to obtain the Covid-19 vaccine to meet the immunization needs of 10 percent of the Malaysian population.

“Insya-Allah (God willing), we will receive the vaccine supply in stages from the first quarter of next year,” he said in his political speech at the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) annual general assembly which was held virtually.

Muhyiddin, who is president of Bersatu, said he was confident that with access to these vaccines and continued efforts to break the chain of infection, the country could bring the disease under full control and help jump-start its economy and improve the well-being of the population. .

Muhyiddin also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts involving countries in the region to fight Covid-19 and reactivate the economy, as well as to ensure equitable access to the vaccine.

On another matter, the prime minister hoped that the 2021 Budget, which was approved at the policy stage on Thursday, would be approved by Dewan Rakyat and later Dewan Negara to ensure that the goal of extending aid to affected groups could be achieved.

“Some people feel that the 2021 budget should be rejected to force a general election. It is not necessary to do this.

“If asked, even yesterday I could have advised Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah) to dissolve Parliament for the general election. But we all know that the problem is Covid-19, “he added.

He said the government would return the mandate to the people to elect the government through general elections when the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
