KUCHING (Oct 6): Sarawak recorded three new positive Covid-19 cases today, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 721, said Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said the latest cases consisted of two imported cases that were registered in Kuching and Miri respectively and one locally transmitted case that was registered in Sibu.
“Case 719 involved a local man who had undergone a Covid-19 screening at the international arrival gate of Kuching International Airport (KIA) upon arrival from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
“The result of the rT-PCR test, which was performed on October 2, came back positive on October 5. The case was instructed to undergo home quarantine after undergoing Covid-19 detection on October 2.” he said while providing the latest update on the Covid-19 situation in the state at a press conference today.
Uggah, who is also chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said the case had also been examined during a random check on August 29 upon arrival at the KIA from Sabah, but the results of the rT-PCR test they were negative.
“The case also traveled to Sabah and returned to Kuching on August 12, but no review was conducted at that time,” he said, adding that the case is a frequent traveler from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu and vice versa due to business and for visit your family members.
He said the case, who is asymptomatic, has been referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment the same day.
“This case has been categorized as ‘Import B’ as it was infected while in a high altitude area called Sabah.
“Further investigations and follow-up of all contacts in this case are still being carried out,” he added.
For the Covid-19 cases in Sarawak, SDMC has classified ‘Import A’ as cases registered abroad and ‘Import B’ as cases registered in other states of the country.
Another ‘Import B’ case today involved a local woman (Case 720) who returned to Miri Airport from Selangor via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2 on October 3, Uggah said.
“This case is also a frequent traveler from Kuala Lumpur, as he works in a private clinic in Petaling Jaya Selangor and would arrive in Sarawak via Bintulu Airport or Miri International Airport.
“He is based in Petaling Jaya, but he used to return to Sarawak during the holidays,” he said.
He said that upon arrival at Miri airport on October 3, the case received an RT-PCR test where the result came back positive on October 4.
“The case, who was complaining of a fever since October 1, was referred to Miri Hospital for further treatment the same day after the Covid-19 test result returned.
“This case has been categorized as ‘Import B’ in view of the fact that the patient was infected when he was in a high-risk area which was probably in Selangor,” he said, adding that further investigations and follow-up of all the contacts with this patient. .
On the locally transmitted positive case, Uggah said it involved a local woman who was examined on October 3 as she is a close contact for Case 714.
“The RT-PCR test result of the case was positive on October 5.
“She has been ordered to self-quarantine at home after being examined on October 3,” he said.
She said this case has no foreign travel history nor did she travel to Sabah in the past month.
“This case is asymptomatic and has been admitted to Sibu the same day.
“The case has been categorized as a case of local infection and the exposure period was between September 30 and October 2 while there was close contact with Case 714,” he added.
Uggah said that with the three new positive cases recorded, this resulted in 19 patients now being treated at hospitals across the state, of which nine are treated in SGH’s isolation ward, six at Miri Hospital, three in the Sibu Hospital and one at the Bintulu Hospital.
“There are also no Covid-19 patients who have recovered or been discharged from hospitals today.
“The total number of recoveries remains at 683, which represents 94.73 percent of total cases,” he said.
Regarding the number of people under investigation (PUI), he said that today there were five new cases and that there were no cases pending laboratory test results.
Since the first positive case of Covid-19 was reported on March 13, the state has recorded a total of 19 deaths.
The districts of Kuching, Sibu and Lawas remain as yellow zones following the three cases of local infection in Lawas, two in Sibu and one in Kuching that were reported in the last 14 days.
