Covid-19: 2 new cases detected in Sarawak today, all imported

KUCHING (December 24): The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today registered two new cases of Covid-19 in the Miri district, both classified as imported cases.

Case 1,095 involves a Sarawak man who has just returned from the Philippines, and Case 1,096 involves a Kuala Lumpur official who has just been transferred to Sarawak and arrived via Miri Airport.

According to SDMC, Case 1,095 flew into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Manila on December 18. He was tested upon arrival at the KLIA, but initially tested negative for Covid-19.

On December 19, he continued his trip to Miri and was instructed to undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine. He was given a swab test on December 21 and found positive for Covid-19.

“Contact tracing for this case is currently ongoing. The case has been categorized as an Import A case due to it being infected abroad, ”SDMC said in its daily Covid-19 update statement today.

Meanwhile, Case 1,096 is an official who has just been transferred to Sarawak. It flew into the state through Miri Airport on December 20.

He was ordered to undergo a mandatory quarantine and was given a swab test on December 22, where he tested positive for Covid-19.

“The case has been isolated and admitted to Miri Hospital for treatment,” the committee said.

SDMC said contact tracing is underway for the case, and that the case has been categorized as an Import B case after being infected in a high-risk area, in this case Kuala Lumpur.

On a lighter note, one case recovered from the disease and was discharged from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), leaving nine cases still in treatment there, three more at Sibu Hospital and four at Miri Hospital.

So far, SDMC said, a total of 1,061 Covid-19 cases have been recovered in Sarawak, as the recovery rate is 96.81 percent of a total of 1,096 cases.

SDMC also recorded seven new Persons Under Investigation (PUI) cases in which two were still awaiting the results of their lab tests.

The committee also registered 353 new cases of persons under surveillance (PUS), bringing a total of 3,959 quarantined cases in 42 hotels and quarantine centers throughout Sarawak.
