KUCHING: Sarawak today registered 14 new Covid-19 cases all in the Kuching district, with a new group of Wisma Saberkas detected, bringing the cumulative case count in the state to 906.
Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said three cases were detected in the Wisma Saberkas Cluster involving employees working for a company there.
“All three cases were detected after contact tracing for Case 884, which tested positive on November 1.
“The first case of this group today is that of a local man working for Case 884. He showed symptoms of coughing and body aches.
“Two other cases in this group are of local men who are workers in a company here (Wisma Saberkas) with a history of close contact with Case 884 between October 27 and 29. One of them has a fever,” Uggah said during the SDMC. Covid-19 daily update press conference here today.
He said the three new Wisma Saberkas Cluster cases were between 26 and 37 years old and underwent screening tests at a private hospital on November 1, and the test results came back positive the same day.
That is why Uggah said that the Health Department has launched a contact tracing operation of the cases in Wisma Saberkas today.
According to Uggah, The Wisma Saberkas Cluster originated in case 866, which was detected as positive for Covid-19 on October 26, before spreading to another four before today’s cases.
One of them was a 13-year-old relative from Case 866.
This has prompted an active case detection (ACD) operation carried out by the Health Department today in Wisma Saberkas, where 112 people were examined and taken with swabs at 12 pm, Uggah added.
Meanwhile, five new Greenhill Cluster cases were detected today involving two women and three men, all local.
One of the women is a professor at a private institution of higher education here with a history of close contact with Case 868. The other woman is a family member of Case 818.
The other case is of a man who is a member of the family of Case 875,
Another case involved a local man who is a member of that group’s Case 875 family. Another case is that of a local man who has a history of close contact with Case 877 of that group. The last case is an employee who works in a business premises in Case 869.
“These cases are between 29 and 64 years old. They were screened between October 31 and November 1, and all of their results came back positive on November 1.
“The Health Department is currently conducting contact tracing on these cases,” Uggah said.
Four of the new cases are of people who underwent self-assessments, he added.
The first case is that of a local man who went for a screening test at a private hospital here on November 1, and his positive results came out the same day.
The second case is that of a local woman who teaches in a nursery here. He underwent an evaluation at a private hospital here on November 1 and his positive results came in the same day.
The third case is that of a male security guard who underwent an examination at a government hospital here on October 31.
The fourth case is a Chinese national reflexologist who underwent a self-assessment in a private hospital here before intending to return to China.
The Chinese national tested positive for Covid-19 on November 1 and showed no symptoms.
According to Uggah, none of these four self-assessment cases had a history of travel to high-risk areas or had been in contact with positive contacts.
“All of these cases are classified as local transmission until their true sources of infection are identified,” Uggah said.
Another case is that of a local who has just returned from Negeri Sembilan by plane.
He arrived at Kuching International Airport on October 21 and was instructed to self-quarantine at a hotel here while awaiting the results of his swab test.
His first swab test came back negative for Covid-19, but his second swab test, which took place on October 31, came back positive on November 1. He was asymptomatic, Uggah said.
The latest case from Sarawak today is that of an Indonesian who underwent an examination at a government health center as a requirement before starting work in a food establishment here.
He was tested on November 1 and his results came back positive the same day.
Uggah said he had no history of traveling to high-risk areas nor had he been in contact with positive cases before.
The case has been classified as local transmission until the true source of infection is identified, Uggah added.
As of today, Sarawak has six active groups. These are the Baki Cluster with 30 cases, Greenhill Cluster with 52 cases, Bah Arnab Cluster with 12 cases, Seladah Cluster with 7 cases, Putra Cluster in Bintulu with 5 cases, and the Wisma Saberkas Cluster with 8 cases.
Uggah said that SDMC recorded that 126 cases are being treated in the hospital in the state today, where 104 are in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Miri Hospital 17, Bintulu Hospital three and Sibu Hospital two.
The Sarawak Covid-19 death toll stands at 19.
Uggah also revealed that 26 new cases of persons under investigation (PUI) were registered today and two of them are still awaiting the results of laboratory tests.
At the same time, he added, 110 new cases of people under surveillance (PUS) were registered today in the state, bringing a total of 2,254 cases to quarantine in 24 hotels throughout the state.
The Kuching district remains a red zone with 100 cases reported in the last 14 days. The Lundu, Miri and Limbang districts remain yellow zones, while 36 other districts are green zones.
