Covid-19: 10 new positive cases in Sarawak today, 8 of which are imported cases

KUCHING (Oct 9): Sarawak today recorded 10 new positive Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the state to 742, said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas .

He said eight of these new cases were people returning from high-risk areas, while one case was detected through an influenza-like illness (ILI) test and the other case was detected through contract tracing. in the state.

“Four of these cases were registered in Kuching, three cases in Lubok Antu and one case each in Daro, Bau and Bintulu,” he told a press conference here today.

Uggah said that three of the four cases were recorded in Kuching and involved security personnel who recently returned from Sabah after helping with state elections there.

“These personnel departed for Sabah on September 25 and returned to Sarawak via Royal Malaysian Air Force Base, Kuching, on September 28.

“Upon arrival in Kuching, they were ordered to undergo a 14-day quarantine at Pulapol. All of these cases went through their first evaluation on September 29, in which the test results came back negative.

“At the 10th day health examination, which was performed on October 7 using the rT-PCR test, the results came back positive for Covid-19 on October 8. All these cases showed no symptoms or signs and have been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment, ”he said.

He said the state Department of Health has conducted the first round of examinations of 509 security personnel. Of the total, he said that only one case tested positive for Covid-19.

He added that a total of 495 security staff members were still waiting for his results for the second review.

Uggah said the other new case reported in Kuching involved security personnel working at the Kuching International Airport (KIA).

This case, he said, underwent an evaluation at a government health clinic on October 7 because he had close contact with Case 718 while performing his duties at KIA on October 2.

“The test result of the case came back positive on October 8 and he has been admitted to SGH for treatment. The case showed no symptoms or signs of Covid-19 and has no history of traveling abroad or to high-risk areas in the past month. “

As such, this case was categorized as locally transmitted, he said.

He added that contact tracing for this case was being carried out proactively.

Uggah said that two of the three reported cases in Lubok Antu were locals, a mother and a child, who had traveled to Sabah and returned from Kota Kinabalu via KIA on September 27.

He said these two cases underwent their first evaluation at KIA and the results were negative.

“During the 10th day screening test performed at a health clinic in Lubok Antu, the results of his rT-PCR test came back positive on October 8. Both cases showed no symptoms or signs of Covid-19.”

He said that the cases had been admitted to the SGH for treatment and that a search for close and social contacts was under way.

For the ILI case, Uggah said it involved a security personnel working in Lubok Antu. The case had a sore throat on October 5 and had completed a health and Covid-19 examination at a health clinic in Lubok Antu.

“The rT-PCR test result for Covid-19 came back positive on October 8 and the case was admitted to SGH the same day. This case never traveled abroad or visited high-risk Covid-19 areas in the past month.

“This is classified as a case of local transmission and the cause of the infection for this case is still being determined and contact tracing is being carried out,” he added.

He said the new case in Daro involved a local, who works on an oil rig in Sabah. The case is said to have returned from Kota Kinabalu, via Labuan, Miri, Sibu and finally reached Daro on October 3 by road.

The case underwent a Covid-19 test at KIA and was ordered to undergo home quarantine.

“The sample taken was sent to the Sungai Buloh Public Health Laboratory, Selangor, and the result of the rT-PCR test came back positive for Covid-19 on October 8.

“The case had a sore throat, cough and fever as of October 1, but recovered on October 6. The case has been referred to Sibu Hospital for treatment. This is classified as a case of infection from the high risk area, which is Sabah. A contact tracing is being done for this case, ”Uggah said.

He said the case reported in Bau involved a local who had a history of travel to Sabah and returned on September 27 via KIA.

The case underwent the first evaluation at KIA, the result of which was negative, he said, adding that the result of the 10th day evaluation, however, came back positive for the virus on October 8.

“This case showed no symptoms or signs of Covid-19 and has been admitted to SGH for treatment. The search for close and social contacts is being carried out for this case ”.

Uggah said the case reported on Bintlu involved a local sales consultant who was found to be infected with Covid-19 on October 8.

He said the case showed symptoms of the disease on October 1 and underwent RTK Covid-19 Antibody test at a private hospital in Bintulu on October 5, and it was found to be non-reactive for Covid-19.

“The case underwent a follow-up evaluation at Bintulu Hospital on October 7. The case was swabbed for rT-PCR testing after it was found to have traveled to Kedah and Kuala Lumpur from September 24 to 27.

“The test result was positive for Covid-19 on October 8. The case is being treated at Bintulu Hospital and contact tracing for this case is ongoing,” he added.
