KUCHING (September 17): After a seven-day streak of zero positive Covid-19 cases, Sarawak today registered a new positive case bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 701.

The secretariat of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement said that Case 701 was classified as an imported case involving an engineer from Cheras, Selangor.

He said the case had entered Sarawak through Kuching International Airport (KIA) after arriving from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on September 14.

He also said that the swab sample from the case had been taken from the case upon arrival at the KIA for rT-PCR testing during the random Covid-19 detection there on the same day.

“She had come to Kuching on official business and was scheduled to stay in Sarawak for two days. She was staying in a hotel when she was in Kuching.

“On September 16, the rT-PCR test came back positive. The case was successfully detected on her flight back to Kuala Lumpur, and she was admitted to Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor, for further treatment the same day.

“The case did not show any symptoms or signs of being infected with Covid-19. It was discovered that she had been infected in her hometown before entering Sarawak. The source of infection is still being investigated and contact tracing is now being carried out, ”the SDMC secretariat said in the statement.

It also revealed that another positive case was detected in Belaga on September 15, but the case is classified as Sabah as it was examined at the Sandakan Health Clinic on September 10 during an active screening activity for visitors to Sabah.

It revealed that the case, an engineer who is also a manager of a plantation company from Penang, had entered Sarawak by road in Merapok, Lawas on September 11 before traveling through the Limbang Division, the country of Brunei and the Division Miri.

He then spent the night in Bintulu before arriving in Belaga on September 12, and then traveled again to Bintulu and Mukah the next day before returning to Belaga on September 14.

“On September 15, the Sabah Health Department notified the Sarawak Health Department about the case after the test results came back positive that day. The Bintulu Division Health Office acted swiftly to detect the person, and he was admitted to Bintulu Hospital on September 16 for further treatment.

“The Sarawak Health Department is now following up the contacts in this case to find out if there has been a Covid-19 infection in the places and premises visited by the case,” he said.

Despite these cases, the statistics provided by the SDMC secretariat revealed that Sarawak is still a green zone, as there were no locally transmitted Covid-19 cases in all districts of the state in the last 14 days.

On a related matter, the SDMC secretariat said that the Alam Cluster remains the only Covid-19 group still active in the state, although the eight patients in this group have recovered from the disease and were discharged from the hospital.

The statement also said that there were five new cases of people under investigation (PUI) today but none of them tested positive for the virus.

With no reported deaths, the death toll in the state remains unchanged at 19 or 2.71 percent of the total number of cases.

As for the cases of persons under surveillance (PUS), there were 23 people who checked into hotels for their mandatory quarantine today. This brings the total number of current PUSs to 654 people at 11 hotels across the state.

The statement also mentioned that the police had issued 57 compound notices about people not complying with standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the Recovery Motion Control Order (RMCO) period.

There were 37 in Kuching, 17 in Mukah, one in Samarahan, one in Betong and one in Sarikei.
