KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has rejected a government claim to lose RM677 million seized from Johor Umno which was allegedly related to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.
Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin, dismissing the prosecution’s request for forfeiture against the Johor Umno liaison committee, said the court found that the applicant had not proven that the money came from illegal activities.
He also said that Johor Umno had presented evidence to show that he had received the money from other sources.
Deputy Prosecutor Nik Haslinie Hashim appeared for the indictment, while attorney Syahrul Syazwan Salehin represented Johor Umno.
The request for forfeiture was filed under the anti-money laundering law.
The MACC had filed civil forfeiture applications against 41 individuals and entities, to recover RM270 million allegedly taken from 1MDB.
