CITY OF GEORGE: The High Court here today dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (pix) against former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in connection with the construction of the Penang Submarine Tunnel Project.

The decision was read by Deputy Registrar L. Umma Devi on behalf of Judge Datuk Rosilah Yop in court, in the presence of attorney Mohamed Fudhail Ahmad Zulaini, who represented Abdul Azeez as plaintiff, as well as attorneys Datuk N. Mureli and Felix Lim, who represented Lim as a defendant.

Mureli, when meeting with reporters outside the court, said that the court rejected the lawsuit brought by the plaintiff (Abdul Azeez) at a cost of RM50,000.

He said the court found that the plaintiff had not proven his claim against the defendant.

Abdul Azeez filed the lawsuit in March 2018, alleging that Lim, who was then the Finance Minister, had made defamatory statements during a press conference at the Chief Minister’s office in Penang on February 28, 2018, and during a day Chinese New Year Open House hosted by Penang Development Corporation on the same day, connecting him (Abdul Azeez) with a RM3 million consultation fee payment from the developer of the underwater tunnel project.

Azeez said the statements gained wide coverage and were published on various websites, electronic news sites and local newspapers, seeking, among others, general and exemplary damages and other reparations that the court deems appropriate.

He also requested a court order to prevent the defendant from republishing the statements. – Called
