KOTA BHARU: Police arrested a couple and seized an AK-47 rifle and 142 bullets in a raid on a home in Kampung Bahagia, Kuala Krai, on Sunday.

Kelantan Police Chief Shafien Mamat said the raid took place at 3.10 a.m. after a public notice.

He said that after the arrest of the two, 50, police found the weapon along with 16 5.56-caliber bullets and 126 12-caliber rounds in their home. The couple did not have a permit for the firearm.

“They are local residents. The husband admitted that he had been in possession of the firearm for the past five years and that it was given to him by a man from Tanah Merah.

“He claimed that he had used it to shoot wild animals such as elephants that often invaded his small rubber property. He said he had shot two elephants with the rifle, ”Shafien said at a press conference at Kelantan police headquarters here today.

It added that the case was being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms (Heavier Penalties) Act of 1971 and Section 8 (a) of the Firearms Act of 1960, which carries a jail sentence, fine and whipping, if he is convicted.

“Urinalysis on the couple showed they were negative for drugs.

“The police are tracking the man who supplied them with the rifle and sold the bullets for RM 15 each,” he said.

Shafien said the couple will remain in pretrial detention until December 19 to facilitate investigations.

He said the case had also been referred to the Kelantan Department of Wildlife because of the shooting at elephants.
