SIBU: The chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Standing Market and Small Merchants Committee, Councilor Albert Tiang, is shocked by the incident at the Sibu Central Market, where a security guard was attacked just because he had asked to a visitor who complied with the standard operating procedure (SOP) established by the authorities.
In this regard, he urged all citizens to never take justice into their own hands if they were not satisfied with certain procedures or requirements.
“Most of the visitors to the central market have been very cooperative and have strictly adhered to the SOP.
“Perhaps, only a handful disagree (with the SOP),” he told reporters here yesterday when he met during the relocation of street vendors from Tiong Hua Road Market.
Tiang stressed that the SOP was meant to safeguard everyone’s safety.
“We advise the public to comply with the SOP to avoid unnecessary conflicts with the security guards at any checkpoint around the central market.
“Everyone has a role to play in keeping Covid-19 at bay,” he added.
Last Saturday, a young man was arrested by police after he beat up a security guard at Gate 1 of Sibu Central Market.
Before the incident, the guard is said to have asked the young man and his friend to record their data and have their temperatures scanned before allowing them to enter the market.
Sibu Police Chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said his men would locate the young man’s friend, who is still at large.
“The complainant is a 31-year-old security guard, who said that he had reprimanded the two visitors for not adhering to the SOP – both were not wearing a mask.
“The young man then beat the guard, who was detained by the young man’s friend,” Stanley said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for riots, and also under Regulation 3 of Prevention and Control Infectious diseases. 2020.
Tiang says that most visitors to Sibu Central Market have been very cooperative and strictly adhered to the SOP; perhaps only some of them disagree with the SOP, he adds.
